Gritty eyes? January 2020

In recent months I have seen quite a few patients complaining of sore, gritty eyes. In addition, patients often complain of burning in the eyes as well. Hours spent looking at a computer screen at work, or indeed one’s phone can exacerbate symptoms as well.

In many instances this can be due to a combination of conditions known as blepharitis and dry eye. Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids in which they can become red, irritated and itchy, with dandruff like scales developing on the eyelashes. It is a common eye condition and can be caused by a common skin bacteria or even an underlying skin condition.

Often going hand in hand with blepharitis is dry eye, a condition whereby one does not produce enough high quality tears to moisten the eye surface. This may be also due to a lack of oily secretions on the eye surface, the absence of which allows the tears to evaporate. Usually patients may need additional lubricants to reduce the symptoms of dry eye.

If you are suffering from gritty, sore eyes, please don’t hesitate to get in touch through contact@sameertrikha.com. I’d be happy to help!
